An event dedicated to June 18 – Human Rights Day was held at the . The event began with a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
Speaking at the event, Associate Professor Elgun Aslanov, Head of the Department of Social Sciences, discussed the measures implemented in Azerbaijan to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms. He noted that on June 18, 1998, the National Leader Heydar Aliyev approved the State Program on the Protection of Human Rights, which for the first time defined the protection of human rights as one of the main priorities of state policy in independent Azerbaijan.
He further emphasized that by the Decree of President Ilham Aliyev dated June 18, 2007, this historic date was officially declared Human Rights Day in Azerbaijan.
In their presentations, the Department of Social Sciences staff members — Associate Professor Abdurrahman Kazimov, Associate Professor Sevda Abdullayeva, Senior Lecturer Mahir Mammadov, and Senior Lecturer Elvira Ahmadova — highlighted that the steps taken to protect human rights in Azerbaijan, the legal reforms implemented, and the mechanisms aligned with international legal standards constitute the foundation of the achievements attained in this field.
The speakers noted that Human Rights Day is celebrated as a reflection of significant progress in legal development, democratic institution-building, and the promotion of human rights. They particularly stressed that the protection of human rights remains one of the highest priorities of state policy and that the continuation of reforms in this area is an essential component of Azerbaijan’s legal and democratic development.
